This friend of mine was a great friend at highschool and he would like to not show any personal details about him.
We scheduled our meeting at Starbucks at a Sunday afternoon.
We scheduled our meeting at Starbucks at a Sunday afternoon.
I walked in and saw him there playing with his phone, said, "Hey, what's up!"
"Hey! How are you? "
"I am good! How are you? Have you been waiting for long?"
"Nah not at all. What are you having?"
"An ice coffee please~"
"Alright, be right back."
As he was getting the coffee, it makes me remember all the things that we did at our highschool and how he is always very thoughtful. It made me smile.
"Alright, so lets talk about tenure. I will get my question up front, how do you think of tenure considering that one of the reasons that we made this policy was to protect good teachers from getting fired for some ridiculous reasons?"
"Well, what kind of reasons are those?"
“Like, good teacher may get fired just because they got into some personal issue with the principle, or even just because the dominating party in the state government has changed. And so they are hurt without doing anything wrong. ”
“I think that when you are looking at, teachers getting out of school. By time they get tenure ususally they have been teaching for twenty or even thirty years. So if they haven’t been fired up then till that point, tenures are not really protecting them from anything, cause they have been so long-established at that school. They are not going to be fired anyways because they have proven themselves not to be a trouble maker, or problem with anybody. ”
“Now at the same time, the teachers do have to get laid off. You may wanna get rid of high payment teacher but most likely you would want to get rid of bad performing teachers. Now many may argue that if tenure is established early on in a teachers career, like teachers get tenure after like 3,4 years, and those teachers get paid by 80000 or more a year, which is a lot of money. So essentially, they are advertising to the world, that ‘oh hey guys, I have this awesome job opportunity, you are gonna get paid more than 80000 dollars a year for the rest of your life, and after three years, you will never get fire. Its impossible, I will be like ‘Oh that sounds like a great deal!’ So you might not wanna be a teacher because you like kids or like teaching but just because the security and the money, so that you can do a bad job and slack off once you get a tenure, So I think we should not grant tenure so early.”
